Farmers Market
Bronx, New York

La Familia Verde Farmers Market grows out of a coalition of community gardens in Crotona, East Tremont, and West Farms that was formed in 1998 to sustain neighborhood environment and culture through education, community service, and horticulture. That mission gives this Tuesday market a distinct Bronx footing: it is tied to the same coalition work that expanded into broader community development issues, including voter registration and census education. In season, the market sets up at Walter Gladwin Park on Tremont Avenue between LaFontaine and Arthur Avenues, bringing produce from five community farms into East Tremont’s weekly routine.
La Familia Verde is not a standalone market operation; it is part of a Bronx garden coalition rooted in Crotona, East Tremont, and West Farms. The coalition says its mission is to sustain the environment and culture of its neighborhood through education, community service, and horticulture, linking food access to broader neighborhood work. Over time, that work expanded beyond gardening to community development efforts such as voter registration and census education.
The market also sits inside a network of Bronx-based partnerships. La Familia Verde has partnered with Bronx Green Up and the Mary Mitchell Center to give fresh produce to residents, and Just Food helped advocate for and develop resources for the market. A newsletter profile notes that Karen Washington ran the farmers market as La Familia Verde celebrated its 10th anniversary season, underscoring its long-running place in the coalition’s work.
The clearest emphasis here is fresh produce from community farms rather than a long roster of prepared-food sellers. La Familia Verde highlights a five-farm lineup, so the market reads as a compact produce stop shaped by neighborhood growing efforts.
An event thread runs alongside the market’s food work. The organization also promotes the Annual Garden of Happiness Block Party, which features food, games, music, fun, and a special Seafood Throw Down event.
No dogs are allowed, a rule that may change plans if you usually pair market errands with a walk. The market is held at Walter Gladwin Park on Tremont Avenue between LaFontaine and Arthur Avenues, with the address given as East Tremont Avenue between Lafontaine Avenue and Arthur Avenue. It runs on Tuesdays from 8 am to 2 pm during the July-to-November season, so this is a once-a-week market rather than a daily produce option.
Karen Washington is named as the market manager and community gardener, and the contact information for the organization includes a Bronx phone number and the email address info@bronxgreenup.org. Restrooms are not available in the visitor details, so plan accordingly for a park-based stop.
EBT is accepted here, along with WIC Coupons, FMNP Coupons, and Health Bucks. La Familia Verde also states that 90% of the food is purchased with SNAP benefits, a strong signal that these payment options are central to how the market serves shoppers.
Mask-wearing and social distancing were mentioned for the 2023 event context.

First I want to say, hands down the best Mexican store in this neighborhood. I've been coming since they opened during the pandemic and this is my only go-to store. I recently moved from this neighborhood and I still go just to get my favorite Mexican products. They are very kind, welcoming and friendly. Fair on their prices and super clean. Must try their tamales, barbacoa and fresh mexican bread (my faves)! This store will definitely not disappoint you!
They always have fresh produce exactly attitude and attentiveness towards the customers. You should really try out the tamales they make on the weekend, I highly recommend their champurrado.
