Farmers Market
Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville City Market - South is tied to ASAP, the Asheville-based nonprofit Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, whose mission is to help local farms thrive, link farmers to markets and supporters, and build healthy communities through connections to local food. That mission gives this market a clear frame: it is built around direct farm sales rather than a loose collection of resellers. In South Asheville, the market offers a Saturday option within the broader Asheville City Market network, pairing a shorter morning schedule with the same local-food emphasis that ASAP advances across the Southern Appalachian region.
ASAP serves the Southern Appalachian region from Asheville and works to build strong farms, thriving local food economies, and healthy communities where farming is valued as central. Asheville City Market - South sits directly inside that mission: ASAP runs the market program, and the market is explicitly producer-only, meaning farm vendors grow or raise the products they sell themselves. That matters in practical terms for shoppers because the market is set up around direct relationships between growers and buyers rather than anonymous supply chains.
The local reach extends beyond sales alone. ASAP also connects farmers markets to nutrition access efforts, including Farm Fresh Bucks, the WNC Double SNAP Network, and Farm Fresh Produce Prescription redemption through participating healthcare providers. For South Asheville shoppers, that places this market inside a wider regional system that supports farms and expands access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
The defining feature here is not a long vendor roster but the market standard itself: Asheville City Market is producer-only, so farm vendors sell what they grow or raise themselves. That points shoppers toward direct-from-farm produce and other agricultural goods rather than a mixed flea-market format.
No dogs are allowed, which can change plans before you leave home. Parking is free for customers at the HomeTrust Bank lot and at the Family Justice Center lot across from the YMCA at 35 Woodfin Street, and handicapped parking is available. If you are navigating by nearby landmarks, the downtown market materials reference North Market Street, Woodfin Street, Walnut Street, Broadway, Charlotte Street, and the Thomas Wolfe Center as orientation points within the wider Asheville City Market setup.
The market also publishes a Weekly Farmers Market Report newsletter and a Fresh at Farmers Markets archive, useful for following seasonal updates tied to the Asheville City Market program.
SNAP/EBT is accepted here, and the market is connected to a broader ASAP network that includes Farm Fresh Bucks and the WNC Double SNAP Network. ASAP also supports Farm Fresh Produce Prescription redemption through participating healthcare providers, adding another route for shoppers using food-access benefits focused on fresh fruits and vegetables.
Free parking for customers is available at the HomeTrust Bank lot and at the Family Justice Center lot across from the YMCA at 35 Woodfin Street. Handicapped parking is available.
Market information booth is at the center of the market in front of the Thomas Wolfe Center; look for the “Market Information” banner. Bring your own bag; reusable tote bags are easiest, and most vendors have plastic produce bags available. Market tokens can be purchased at the market information booth and spend like cash; tokens do not expire.

I work at a business on this street on Saturdays and every weekend I always meet some of the kindest people selling FANTASTIC foods, goods, and produce. Carolina Flowers are always a hit. Four Sisters are peak pastries. Worthy Baker is so great to talk to and their jar pies HOLY COW! That is just a few of the best local options that are there almost every Saturday morning. The people running the show are great too! Always kind and willing to chat if they aren’t busy. Honestly, if I didn’t have to be here on Saturdays, I would still come just to talk to the amazing people. If you haven’t been…...
Great place to get locally grown vegetables especially squash, kale, cabbage. All the vegetables were grown organically and without pesticides. The nut cheese vendor was awesome and there was live music as well. I just wish it went from the morning until about two in the afternoon or a little later :-)
An awesome farmers market. You will want to enjoy a fresh brewed cup of coffee and perhaps enjoy a French pastry while you shop. The local farmers gather every Saturday, displaying some of the most amazing produce you will have ever seen! In particular, we enjoy their fresh wild Chanterelle Mushrooms. Don't buy all of them, and make sure you leave me some! They are my favorite mushrooms!
We were a little surprised at how small this was on a weekday but the apples we got there were the best apples we’ve ever had! A great little find!
