Farmers Market
San Francisco, California
Heart of the City Farmers' Market is an independent, farmer-operated nonprofit that runs year-round in San Francisco's Civic Center, with roots going back to 1981. The market relocated in 2024 from United Nations Plaza to Fulton Plaza between the Downtown Library and the Asian Art Museum, while keeping its mission centered on supporting small farmers and making fresh food available in the city. That long-running nonprofit structure gives the market a distinct shape: a produce-heavy lineup backed by prepared food, seafood, baked goods, and payment access designed to widen who can shop here.
The mix here leans heavily toward farm produce, with a notably broad range of vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, flowers, seafood, breads, and hot food across both market days. Several growers specialize in crops less common on standard farmers market tables, including bittermelon, taro, saluyot, jujube, purslane, and shiso.
No dogs are allowed, which is the detail most likely to change how you plan your visit. Free 90-minute parking is available in the Civic Center Garage underneath Civic Center Plaza across from City Hall, and validation can be picked up on the corner of Larkin and Fulton next to the Main Library or at the market information tent. Metered street parking is available on McAllister Street and Grove Street, and additional garage options include Trinity Place Garage and the UC Hastings Garage. Fulton Plaza parking on market days is reserved for farmers market staff and vendors only, and vehicles cannot block access to Fulton Plaza.
The market accepts EBT, credit cards, and WIC, with payment assistance handled at the information tent near the intersection of Larkin and Fulton Streets. SNAP/EBT is accepted here year-round, making the market's produce, pantry items, and eligible foods more accessible across both weekly market days.
Free 90 min. parking is available in the Civic Center Garage underneath Civic Center Plaza across from City Hall (entrance on McAllister St. between Polk St. and Larkin St.). I love going to the farmers market on Sunday mornings. It's a really nice family outing. I really really like supporting all the local vendors. The prices are so much cheaper than the grocery stores, you get a lot more for your money. And, if your family receives CalFresh (EBT), you can use it at the farmers market citywide.
Best prices and variety of seasonal fruits/veggies! Open Wednesday/Sunday and has a lively atmosphere and various vendors. I love coming here to get produce and eggs for the week or getting food from the food trucks/vendors. Fresh flowers are available too Bring cash or you can use your card to purchase tokens
This is how we should all be eating is fresh produce everyday and every meal. Lots of fruit and vegetables and some fresh herbs. I arrived at 8am on a Sunday. Will bring cash next time. Lots of long beans for sale. The peaches I sampled were outstanding. I need to eat more vegetables than fruit and non-starchy vegetables at that. I am going to buy the dark leafy green kale next time to put in soup.
Great selection of produce with some flower, honey, bread, cheese, and prepared food vendors. Plenty of food trucks locate near the market and in front of the Civic Center. Produce prices are incredibly low and vendors are universally friendly, and helpful. I would like to see more vendor with organic produce.
This market serves regular people and always has great prices. You'll find tons of fresh produce, some plants, maybe fresh seafood, and a limited number of prepared items (sometimes south Asian, cakes, juices).
